Microsoft and Android Vendor-Specific Options in DHCPv4
Introduction
DHCPv4 Exchange Vendor-Specific Options
The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol version 4 (DHCPv4) allows administrators to configure Vendor-specific Options to be sent to DHCP clients. These options provide additional information about the client device and can be used for a variety of purposes, such as identifying the client's operating system or vendor.
Vendor Class Identifiers
One of the most common Vendor-specific Options is the Vendor Class Identifier (VCI). The VCI identifies the vendor of the client device. For example, the VCI for Microsoft Windows devices is "MSFT 50".
Client Vendor Name
Another common Vendor-specific Option is the Client Vendor Name. This option provides the name of the client device's vendor. For example, the Client Vendor Name for Microsoft Windows devices is "Microsoft Corporation".
Relationship Between VCI and Client Vendor Name
The VCI and Client Vendor Name are typically related. For example, the VCI for Microsoft Windows devices is "MSFT 50" and the Client Vendor Name is "Microsoft Corporation". However, there are some cases where the VCI and Client Vendor Name may not match.
Example
The following table shows an example of the VCI and Client Vendor Name for different client devices:
| **Vendor** | **VCI** | **Client Vendor Name** | |---|---|---| | Microsoft | MSFT 50 | Microsoft Corporation | | Google | WEB MSFT 5 0 | Google, Inc. | | Android | dhcpcd-5 5 6 | Android |
