Estonia to Sign Contract for Construction of Unique Rail Baltica Section

Groundbreaking Ceremony Scheduled for July 1

Tallinn, Estonia - June 29, 2023

On July 1, 2023, Estonia will mark a significant milestone in the development of the Rail Baltica project with the signing of a contract for the construction of the Pärnu-Rakvere section – the most complex and longest section of the railway in Estonia.

The contract will be signed between Rail Baltica Estonia OU, the implementing body of the Rail Baltica project in Estonia, and the construction consortium led by Spanish construction company Acciona Construcción.

The Pärnu-Rakvere section is a 118-kilometer stretch of railway that will connect the city of Pärnu on the west coast of Estonia to the town of Rakvere in the northeast. The section will include 32 bridges, 28 viaducts, 15 animal passages, and 6 stations, including a new central station in the city of Pärnu.

The construction of the Pärnu-Rakvere section is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

Prime Minister Kaja Kallas said that the signing of the contract marks a major step forward in the implementation of the Rail Baltica project in Estonia.

"The Rail Baltica project is a strategic infrastructure project that will connect Estonia to the European rail network and improve our economic competitiveness," said Kallas.

Minister of Economic Affairs and Infrastructure Riina Sikkut said that the construction of the Pärnu-Rakvere section will create new jobs and boost the economy of the region.

"The Rail Baltica project will have a significant impact on the development of Estonia's economy and society," said Sikkut.

The Rail Baltica project is a greenfield railway line that will connect Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, to Warsaw, the capital of Poland. The project is expected to be completed by 2026.
